Athletes of the Week: Joplin's Wardlow, Webb City's Sargent

Joplin swimmer Nathan Wardlow and Webb City shortstop Abby Sargent have been named as the latest Zimmer Marketing Male and Female Athletes of the Week brought to you by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair and Elements Construction Concepts.

Wardlow, a senior, was integral in Joplin’s second-place finish at the Carthage Invitational over the weekend. Wardlow earned a trio of first-place finishes. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.57, while taking first place in the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.48 seconds. Wardlow was also a part of the 400 freestyle relay team, which took first place in a time of 3:44.45.

“He really is just an inspiration for the rest of the time about where hard work, dedication and commitment can get you,” Joplin swim coach Kassandra Messerley said to JoplinSportsHub.com. “I am extremely proud of his achievements at the Carthage Invite.”

Sargent, a sophomore, played a huge factor in Webb City’s success last week. The Cardinals finished with a 5-2 record for the week, including a 4-1 record in the Springfield Tourney.

In seven games, Sargent finished with a .556 average and a 1.202 OPS (on-base+slugging) and added eight RBI and seven runs scored. Defensively, Sargent finished with a .995 fielding percentage with 10 putouts and four double plays turned.

“Abby is not only an offensive threat, she is one of the best shortstops in the area,” Webb City coach Shauna Friend told JoplinSportsHub.com. “She never lacks effort on defense or on the basepaths. She is a great competitor, a great teammate and a great role model.”
