Joplin's Schwarting, Strickland named athletes of the week

Joplin baseball player Kutler Schwarting and Joplin sprinter Brylee Strickland have been named the Zimmer Marketing Male and Female Athletes of the Week brought to you by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair.

Schwarting, a senior, had a dominant outing on the mound against Marshfield last weekend. He threw a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out three to earn the win in a 7-0 victory. Schwarting added four hits and an RBI at the plate throughout the week.

“Kutler did a tremendous job against a quality Marshfield lineup,” Joplin baseball coach Kyle Wolf said. “He was able to consistently throw strikes and kept them off balance. He was able to find a way to find some big outs in a couple of critical situations to keep them from scoring, which allowed our offense to continue tacking on runs and maintain momentum throughout the game.”

Strickland, a junior, had an impressive showing at the Webb City Invitational last week. She earned a pair of first-place finishes. Strickland was atop the podium in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.61 seconds, while she also finished with the best time in the 400 at 59.80 seconds.

“Brylee has worked hard all year to clean up the little things,” Joplin coach Kenny Peters said. “Specifically, she has worked hard on her starts and it has shown with a season best in the 100. She will be a large part of our program moving forward.”

Coaches can nominate students for athletes of the week by emailing their name, sport and last week’s stats/accolades to sports@zrimarketing.com.
