Webb City baseball player Andrew Young and Joplin’s Ava Doll have been named this week’s Zimmer Marketing’s Male and Female Athlete of the Week brought to you by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair.
Young, a senior, had a performance to remember in the opening game of the Class 5 quarterfinals, garnering three hits, including a triple and a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 4-3 win. He drove in two and scored a run as well.
“Andrew’s hit in the top of the 11th inning will be talked about in our baseball program for a long time,” Webb City coach Andrew Doenigg said. Two strikes, two outs with the season on the line and he refused to give in. All of the kids in our dugout knew that with him at the plate, we had a chance and man, did he ever come through.”
Doll, a senior, had a strong performance in the Class 5 state track meet. In the 3200-meter run, Doll took bronze with a third-place time of 10:59.66. She also added a 12th-place finish in the 1600.
“She’s been an incredible athlete to coach,” Joplin distance coach Dora Eastin said. “She is humble, hardworking and extremely dedicated. She shows up every day ready to put in the work and never backs down from a challenge. She’s a go-getter, and I have truly been blessed to have the opportunity to coach her.”
