Third-ranked Carthage emphatically flipped the hierarchy in Class 5 on Friday night, blowing past top-ranked Webb City 36-14 to seize control of the Central Ozarks Conference West race.
The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage, turning a tense rivalry clash into a runaway statement win on the road. The loss marks the Cardinals' first stumble in league play, sending tremors through the district playoff standings with three weeks left in the regular season.
Further south in Seneca, Tom Hodge Stadium played host to the wildest shootout of the evening. The Indians held off Monett 52-38 in a 90-point Homecoming marathon that featured relentless counterpunching well into the fourth quarter.
Monett gave the home crowd immediate cause for concern, posting a season-high 38 points and answering Seneca drive for drive through the middle quarters. But every time the Cubs pulled within striking distance, Seneca’s ground game went back to work, manufacturing clock-draining touchdown marches that kept Monett's upset bid at arm's length.
Around the Ozarks, shutouts and late-game defensive stands defined the rest of Friday’s slate:
Republic 35, Joplin 0: Republic’s ground attack chewed up yards and clock, while their defense smothered the Eagles at every turn to pitch a comprehensive road shutout.
Willard 20, Neosho 14: Willard came up with a pair of critical fourth-quarter stops to fend off a late Wildcats rally and secure a six-point conference win.
West Plains 7, Carl Junction 0: The Zizzers clamped down from the opening whistle, blanking the Bulldogs behind a stifling defensive effort.
