Pittsburg snapped a three-game losing streak Monday night, erasing a 2-1 match deficit on the road to outlast Joplin in five sets (18-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-23, 15-13).
The win lifts the Purple Dragons to 13-8, while the host Eagles drop to 10-10.
Joplin dictated terms from the opening whistle. Finding soft spots across Pittsburg’s back line, the Eagles built early transition runs and cruised through the first set, 25-18.
Pittsburg counterpunched immediately. Cleaning up their serve-receive, the Dragons opened the second set with a flurry of kills at the net, punishing Joplin over the block to square the match.
The momentum did not last. Joplin blew open the third set behind aggressive serving, putting together a 10-point margin to run away 25-15.
Pittsburg did not fold.
Instead of wilting under Joplin’s student section, the Dragons dug in during an extended fourth frame. They traded side-outs deep into the twenties before squeaking out the final two points to take it, 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the 15-point sprint, Pittsburg jumped out early and held off a late Joplin charge to seal the road victory, 15-13.
Pittsburg travels to Chanute next, while Joplin remains at home to host Republic.
